    • Expanded hormone panels - female sex hormones (FSH, LH, oestrogen, progesterone, testosterone), full thyroid panel (TSH, T4, T3, thyroid autoantibodies, reverse T3), pituitary hormones, tests for specific hormonal disorders

    • Food or airborne allergy antibodies, food sensitivity antibodies (where appropriate)

    • Autoimmune markers, including specific autoantibodies

Our doctors and phlebotomists perform the blood draws at our Care Quality Commission registered clinic, and we can also organise blood draws at the Doctor’s Laboratory in London and a mobile phlebotomist anywhere in the UK if needed.

    • Salivary cortisol and DHEA levels to look at adrenal function

    • Hormone metabolite panels (particularly relevant in hormone-related conditions, e.g. breast and gynaecological cancer), e.g. DUTCH testing and HuMAP

    • DNA SNP testing, e.g. Lifecode Gx and DNA Life profiles

    • Breath tests for SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth) and lactose/fructose intolerance

    • Methylation panels

    • Histamine/mast cell activation syndrome testing

    • Organic pollutants and heavy metals

Types of Cancer We Support at Synthesis Clinic

Breast cancer

Oestrogen receptor positive (ER+) breast cancer, HER2 positive breast cancer, triple negative breast cancer (TNBC)

For breast cancer nutrition support we suggest working with Emma Marshall or Korina Karadimou.

Gynaecological cancers

Ovarian cancer, endometrial cancer, cervical cancer, vaginal cancer

Colorectal cancer

Lung cancer

Prostate cancer

Other solid tumours

Including but not limited to brain cancer, melanoma, various gastrointestinal cancers, and rarer cancers, such as sarcomas, angiosarcomas and NETs (neuroendocrine tumours)

For non-breast cancer nutrition support we suggest working with Linda Sims or Olena Jones who support clients with a broad variety of solid tumours.

BLOOD CANCERS (HAEMATOLOGICAL MALIGNANCIES)

Please note that we currently only offer support for stable blood cancer (haematological malignancy) patients unless there is a direct referral from the oncology team. This is because of a number of intricacies around these types of cancers, including high intensity treatment regimes, bone marrow transplantation and the use of blood products, which require close collaboration. For blood cancer nutrition support we suggest working with Korina Karadimou with specialist expertise in this area.

Holistic cancer care at Synthesis Clinic - nutrition, exercise, sleep, mind-body and relaxation, herbal medicine, yoga

How Can Integrative Oncology Support From Synthesis Clinic Help Me?

  • Support prehabilitation (preparation for treatment) before surgery, chemotherapy or targeted treatments for better treatment tolerance and recovery

  • Help reduce side effects of treatment and potentially support clinical outcomes

  • Assist with recovery following active treatment (surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy)

  • Help manage recurrence risk and long-term effects of treatment in cancer survivors

  • Support ongoing treatment and quality of life when living with metastatic cancer

What Happens During My Integrative Cancer Care Package?

  • We always ask for copies of medical letters and most recent test results to be uploaded to our secure portal. This enables us to make sure we are truly integrating with any NHS or private care you are receiving for safe and effective practice. Please make sure that you notify the clinic coordinator of anyone else (within or outside the NHS or private care) who is providing you with health and wellbeing advice.

  • This may involve a single specialty at the clinic, such as seeing one of our integrative oncology doctors , a cancer nutritionist or health coach, or incorporate a team approach, tailored to your unique situation with aligned input from several professionals to better support your resilience and quality of life.

  • We offer support throughout the cancer care process, from diagnosis through different treatment steps to cancer survivorship or living well with cancer. We use a truly integrated approach where members of our multidisciplinary team meet regularly to discuss their approach to each individual and to ensure everybody in the team is united behind you.

Please note that members of our cancer nutrition team are not able to work with integrative doctors outside our direct referral network, as we aim to keep an aligned and consistent approach. If you have other people apart from your oncology team involved in your care, you will need to notify us and discuss this with our clinic coordinator before booking in.

Please see further general information about our integrative oncology services and some important answers to frequently asked questions here.

Our Systems Approach to Cancer group programmes

  • We will start with an introduction to integrative oncology and how it intelligently synthesises the best of conventional, nutrition, lifestyle, psycho-emotional wellbeing and complementary medicine in week 1. This session is usually covered by one of our doctors, including Dr Nina Fuller-Shavel and Dr Emma Davies.

We will then go over the foundations of nutrition in week 2, movement in week 3, and stress management and sleep support in week 4. The exact schedule is subject to change but by the end of month 1 you will have build solid foundational knowledge in nutrition and lifestyle support.

  • In month 2 we start delving into the Systems Approach to Cancer. Our sessions delivered by different members of our cancer care team will cover the following aspects:

    1. Mental/emotional/spiritual health and the importance of circadian rhythms for our health and wellbeing

    2. The role of the gut microbiome in cancer and treatment support

    3. The role of the immune system and inflammation in cancer development and treatment and how we can support a healthy immune balance

    4. Factors that affect our environmental exposures and toxic load and how we can support healthy detoxification without affecting medications

  • In month 3 we continue exploring the Systems Approach to Cancer with our multidisciplinary team, covering the following topics:

    1. Supporting healthy circulation and the structure of our body, including bone and muscle health, the role of fascia and how scar therapy can help

    2. Mitochondrial and metabolic health, including the importance of blood sugar regulation, fat metabolism (incl. cholesterol) and supporting energy

    3. Hormone balance, including sex hormones, thyroid hormones and other influencers of our hormone environment, as well as medications that can impact hormones and managing related symptoms

    4. The role of methylation in the body and how epigenetics is important in cancer development and progression, as well as exploring impact of genes that can affect genomic stability, e.g. BRCA1/2, PALB2, TP53 etc

  • After the foundational 3 months, we will co-design the programme with you as a group. We will ask you about regular sessions, e.g. yoga, breathwork, EFT, exercise, and any additional topics you would like to cover, from herbal medicine, acupuncture or mistletoe therapy to fasting, hyperthermia etc. We can arrange sessions with the team or guest speakers on the subjects you would like to learn most about.

What is the Systems Approach to Cancer?

Through her extensive study and clinical experience in integrative and functional medicine, nutrition and other therapeutic modalities, Dr Nina Fuller-Shavel has created the Systems Approach to Cancer Programme, which is applied in clinic and used in training programmes for nutrition and medical professionals.

This is an approach that takes the systems biology view of cancer and cancer hallmarks, while applying the whole person perspective and treating the ecosystem as a whole. For every person who comes to the clinic, Dr Nina and her team will assess the different aspects below in detail from the clinical history and targeted testing as appropriate, providing a detailed and personalised plan to address the aspects that come to the fore. This not only helps us dynamically manage symptoms but more importantly, supports whole person resilience to deliver better quality of life and clinical outcomes.

Who is the group programme suitable for?

We offer separate programmes for people living with cancer and people in early survivorship (within the first 3 years post-treatment). If you are interested in how integrative oncology and the Systems Approach to Cancer can support you, this is a great opportunity to learn more within a group setting.

How is the programme delivered?

The programme is delivered by our multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals, including doctors and nutrition, exercise, yoga, health coaching, and mental wellbeing professionals, as well as expert patients. It is a mix of live 60 min sessions (usually once every 1-2 weeks) and pre-recorded content and resources related to that monthʼs theme. In our live sessions, we aim to provide information for 30-45 minutes with 15-30 min for Q&A to keep them interactive.

Please note that this is not a self-paced course, it is designed to be mostly attended live with recordings only for catching up on the material provided on the Circle platform. While many downloadable materials are provided to keep as a reminder following the course, there is no ongoing access to videos after the course has been completed outside of a community membership model. We update the course regularly to keep up with the latest research in cancer care and integrative oncology.

What is the monthly fee and how do I get started?

The monthly membership fee for the group programme incorporating input from our multidisciplinary team is £125 per month. Please contact Jody, our Integrative Cancer Care clinic coordinator (jody@synthesisclinic.co.uk), for further information or sign up below.

Enrolment for January 2025 finishes Thursday 12th December 2024 with the first course sessions running 8th/9th January. Our Thrivers sessions run on Wednesday evenings at 6pm, and our Living Well with Cancer sessions take place on Thursday lunchtimes 1-2pm.

Please contact Jody, our Integrative Cancer Care clinic coordinator, to discuss your needs, 1:1 care and group programmes and book in.

If you have any questions about our integrative oncology services or are unsure about the support you may need in your individual case, please contact our Integrative Cancer Care clinic coordinator, Jody Middleton.

 FAQs

  • Prior to your first consultation, you will be sent a confirmation email with the details of the appointment, any paperwork that needs to be completed and, in most cases, a link to complete your health and lifestyle history forms. Please note that this is an extensive form and you will need to allow around 30 minutes to complete it. Please have any supplements or medications you take to hand when you fill in the form.

You will need to complete and return the forms and any other associated paperwork, such as the 3-day nutrition and lifestyle diary, at least 2 working days prior to the appointment. It is crucial for our professionals to have the right information prior to seeing you in person, so that we can use our time together in the most effective way possible.

Please note that all appointments are invoiced for in advance and are payable before the consultations. There is a 48-hour cancellation policy for all appointments.

  • During the initial 75-90 min consultation, one of our practitioners will review your health goals, take a full history of your symptoms, family history, current and past medical problems and treatment and any recent test results. We would also have a detailed discussion of lifestyle including nutrition, sleep, physical activity, stress management and environmental factors. We would also discuss what may be underlying the issues you are experiencing and recommend any further testing needed and any associated costs.

Following the initial appointment, you will receive a full management plan, including any recommendations on further testing, lifestyle measures (including supplementation where necessary) and other advice as needed within 5-10 working days (usually within a week). If you are on a package, you will be provided with contact details for your clinic coordinator who will help you make further appointments, order tests and answer queries about how the clinic works.

Please note that we are happy to answer 1-2 emails after the consultation to clarify any points in the plan but beyond that, all non-urgent queries will be answered at your next consultation. Any email advice from our professionals beyond the 1-2 email limit would be chargeable due the time involved in answering further queries and would be subject to the professional’s availability.

Integrative and Lifestyle Medicine is not a quick fix, and commitment to a 3-6 month programme is required (although complex cases may need a longer period of support from the clinic).

  • Please contact your clinic coordinator to book in your blood tests and to arrange test kits. Some tests will need to be ordered directly by you and you will be advised if that is the case.

An overview of our diagnostic test offering is available here.

  • If you booked a package with one of our doctors, a 3-month package with our nutrition team or a health coaching package, you will be contacted by the clinic coordinator to help schedule your follow-up appointments. Three contact attempts will be made but following that, it will be up to the individual to contact the clinic to request a follow-up appointment within the package timeframe. It is important to note that all nutrition packages are designed to be completed within 3 months and a maximum of 6 months, and no further package appointments can be made beyond this time. Unfortunately we cannot hold time in practitioner diaries indefinitely for package appointments, and any remaining sessions that are not taken up within 6 months (or as per package Ts&Cs) would be null and void.

  • That depends on the professional you are seeing but follow-ups with our doctors are usually every 6-8 weeks. Health coaches and yoga therapists usually start with weekly appointments, and nutritional professionals usually see their clients every 2-4 weeks, depending on the stage of the process. Psychiatry support, including psychotherapeutic input, starts off weekly or fortnightly, although this can be tailored to your own individual circumstances.

  • We do require a significant amount of paperwork to help us with pre-consultation assessment, monitoring of outcomes and clinical audit, so we suggest setting aside at least 30-45 minutes to complete the paperwork and having your medical letters and any recent test results to upload. It is also not possible to be precise about lifestyle recommendations without having a regular nutrition and lifestyle diary completed, so we usually ask for it at every medical and nutrition consultation unless it is a very brief review. This is according to clinic procedures to help us provide effective personalised support. Please learn more about about how we work by reading our clinic overview and FAQ here.

In our integrative cancer care division, it is essential that we know about everyone involved in your care (NHS, charity, private practitioners) to help support you in the most effective way possible. Where there are clashes between our integrative and collaborative approach vs alternative or possibly unsafe methods available on the Internet, we may need to ask you to consider which approach you would like to go forward with. Unfortunately there are certain practices out there that we would not support or recommend. You are advised to check with the clinic coordinator in the first instance and discuss further during the discovery call (where available) to ensure you are happy with the approach and everyone on the team is aligned. If anything is unresolved or requires further attention, please contact the Practice Manager, Emma Eastman, on emmaeastman@synthesisclinic.co.uk.

Additionally, please note that we are a UK-based adult only clinic, and we will only offer appointments to those over 18. Unfortunately, we are not able to offer an opportunity for other people to pay for the patient’s treatment without their knowledge of the costs as per clinic policy. While we appreciate the wonderful offer of support, payments are processed via the person’s portal, and we strongly believe that clients and patients should have full knowledge about and engagement with their care.

Please note that coming to see our team is not a substitute for standard NHS care, including regular GP services, acute/emergency care and out-of-hours services. For integrative cancer support we always aim to work with your oncology team to support best practice and clinical outcomes.
